Chapter Sixteen – Ryan

“Ryan.” Clint strode across the parking lot to meet him. “Are you okay?”

Ryan was standing in the doorway of the reception area. He’d come to ask if anyone knew where Jodie was. “Jodie isn’t here.”

“No, Carter came over, she’s gone back to his place to have lunch.” Clint mounted the steps and ushered Ryan inside, closing the door behind him. “She came to tell me she was going. She said that you were working until late today to catch up on the jobs you pushed back from this morning.”

“Yeah, that was the plan, but I got my work done fast.” Ryan cracked a grin. “I guess the idea of spending time with my mate lit a fire underneath me.”

“I’d say you were right.” Clint looked up as the door opened and Kay came in.

“Hey, I thought I saw your truck.” She rubbed her hand over her swollen belly. “How are you doing?”

“He’s pining for his mate,” Clint joked. “He’s been apart from her for a couple of hours.” The older man winked at Kay, who chuckled. “Although, from the look on his face a moment ago, I think he was scared she’d gotten into her car and run back to her fiancé.”

“From what Jodie said when she brought the clothes I loaned her back, that is never going to happen.” Kay moved closer to Ryan and placed her hand on his upper arm. “She might not know you are her fated mate, but there is obviously an attraction there. She knows it. You know it.”

“And your bond will help Jodie get through this,” Clint told Ryan. “Things might get worse before they get better as she deals with what’s happened. But once she knows that you will be by her side no matter what, she can draw on your strength.”

“Thanks, Clint. I needed to hear that.” Ryan rubbed his hand across his eyes. “I know what I have to do. And I know I need to tell her soon. But I don’t want to put any more pressure on her.”

“Listen,” Kay told him. “You’ll know when the time is right. And believe me, no matter what her initial reaction is, once the news sinks in, she’ll be thankful that you are there.”

“I truly hope so,” Ryan replied.

“She will,” Kay assured him. “Because then she’ll know that she’ll never have to question her heart. She’ll never have to figure out if a man like Wilhelm is being genuine or not.”

“Thanks for reminding me.” Ryan sucked in a breath. “I have been told several times today by different people that I shouldn’t leave it too long before telling Jodie that we’re mates. So, I guess I should pluck up the courage and speak to her tonight.”

“Show her your bear,” Kay advised him. “It’s the fastest way to get your point across, and there’s no way she can question whether you are telling the truth or not if she is faced with a big bear who is ecstatic to meet her.
